DAY 4: ALL THE WATERS OF THIS WORLD

“Oh lover go on and cry me all the waters of this world and I'll row you home…”
STORY
The title track of the album is another love song based on African rhythms, which, to me, evoke the rhythms of the tide & the ocean. The shifting, turbulent rhythms underneath give this song a restlessness & a yearning: exactly the vibe you want for this song about a failed, frustrated love affair. I flew Chicago-based singer-songwriter Aerin Tedesco into Seattle for a few days to sing this song with me as a duet. The video above is a stripped-down live version that Aerin & I filmed & recorded at Chicago’s Old Town School of Folk Music.
Aerin during the original take…
As I've mentioned before, this is a remixed, remastered version of my debut album. That means that we took all of the original tracks & made a better-sounding version of the same record. We ALSO re-recorded ALL of the vocals on the album. That's pretty exciting because the version of this song that you're hearing NOW benefits from the fact that Aerin & I have been singing this song together for YEARS.
P.S. Curious to hear the original version, to compare it to the NEW one that Aerin & I have re-sung? Scroll all the way down to the bottom ;)

LYRICS
So we cry 'cause we're made of water
and its salt is our debt to the sweat of our fathers
and our mothers bled us into this light screaming
where blood tastes of metal and tears make us rust
"How could you love me? I ain't done nothin'
My wounds are my prison I'm suckling fear"
Oh woman what can I do?
Your heart has gone dry and I can't get through
Oh lover go on and cry me all the waters of this world
and I'll row you home
You're a feather on the breath of your fear
You want trust but you'll settle for safety I just want you near
Let it fly all your pride your secrets into the light a startled dove
Let it rain on the desert of all your fevers and grieving my love
"How could you love me? I ain't done nothin'
my wounds are my prison I'm suckling fear"
Oh woman what can I do?
Your heart has gone dry and I can't get through
Oh lover go on and cry me all the waters of this world
and I'll row you home
The ache of a garden asleep in the dust
The drought of your shame the echo of us
What I am most truly is what I am with you
But your heart has gone dry and I can't get through
Oh lover go on and cry me all the waters of this world
and I'll row you home
You are the thirst in me darlin' but what can I do?
Your heart has gone dry and I can't get through
Oh lover go on and cry me all the waters of this world
and I'll row you home
