DAY 10: LULLABY

“Love is love. Time is time. Impossible to define…”
STORY
“ ‘Lullaby’ is the very first song we recorded for this, my debut album, in the studio we had just finished building…”
“Lullaby” was written by my long-time collaborator Aerin Tedesco, a Chicago-based singer-songwriter. I asked her to sing it as a duet with me for this album. Actually, I guess it’s a LOT more than a duet, because several hundred crickets are singing along with us in the background.
The above video is a lovely, fancily-produced live version that Aerin and I filmed and recorded at Chicago’s Old Town School of Folk Music.
“Lullaby” is the very first song we recorded for this, my debut album, in the studio we had just finished building. It was SUCH an emotionally-charged moment. My co-producer Patrick set up the microphone and recorded Aerin’s vocals and guitar. Then she flew back home to Chicago.
Weeks later, my other co-producer Don asked Patrick: “Hey, these tracks sound a little odd - which direction was the front of the mic facing?”…to which Patrick replied: “Uh, there’s a ’front’ of the mic?”
It turns out that Patrick had recorded all of Aerin’s parts with the microphone facing AWAY from her. Don did the best he could to, as they say in the music biz, ‘fix it in the mix’. It turned out great.
And yet…I’ve told you how excited I am that THIS version of the album is newly remixed, remastered and, in some ways, re-recorded version. The vocals for this song have been newly recorded, years later: this time with the mic FACING Aerin!
Patrick Strole, Aerin Tedesco & Aaron English

LISTEN & DOWNLOAD
As I’ve mentioned above, the original version of '“Lullaby” was recorded with Aerin’s mic facing AWAY from her. She re-tracked her vocals for the remix/remaster with the correct mic placement. See if you can hear the difference :).
P.S. The downloads are for the remixed/remastered version.
If you’re going for quality, you’ll want to download the Wav file from Google Drive. If you just want a standard Mp3, you can download that straight from my Soundcloud for free.
LYRICS
Love is love
Time is time
Impossible to define
Past is past
Line for line
and it's getting so hard to find
Oh which side is mine?
And when I cannot hold you
When I cannot feel you
When I cannot hear you cry
Oh I'll sing you to sleep
I'll sing you to sleep
I'll sing you to sleep
a lullaby a lullaby a lullaby
Lost my will
Lost my power
and I seem to get up to fall down
And I don't know when
And I don't know how
All I know is now
All I know is now
And if you need to leave me
If it's all collapsing
Let your tired body down
And I'll sing you to sleep
I'll sing you to sleep I'll sing you to sleep
a lullaby a lullaby a lullaby
I'll sing you to sleep I'll sing you to sleep
I'll sing you to sleep I'll sing you to sleep
I'll sing a lullaby I'll sing a lullaby here…

The Original VS. The New
I’m not the same singer that I was when we recorded All the Waters of This World: in the years since, I’ve played thousands of concerts & spent thousands of hours in the studio.
So what was it like re-singing ALL of the vocals for this new version of the album? Click below to find out!
